We’ve spent our lives in the kitchen, but one thing that lola and nanay never did was write the recipes down. We’re working on figuring out how to translate their measurements into recipes we can hand down for future generations. For now, we’re sharing these cookbooks we love. Maybe you have them in your collection already, or you have a few to recommend.
In honor of APAHM, we’ve been thinking about a few cookbooks written by amazing Asian Pacific Americans.
This is a must-have resource for any Pinoy, lover of the Philippines, or Filipino foodaholic. Recommended to us by a chef, we knew we needed this book. The photos, the stories, and the regional food descriptions, it’s all there for you to soak up. Mom flipped through it and she reminisced about her grandmother’s kitchen and the food she missed from home. Clearly, it hits home for us.
This is an amazing read for every mother-to-be, or anyone caring for a mother-to-be. Postpartum care for mother is not written about enough. This book fills the gap. Heng Ou shares about the Chinese tradition of “zuo yuezi,” and how Chinese and other cultures around the world believe the sacred time after childbirth should be focused on nourishing mama. With stories and recipes, she shares how to apply these practice for Western readers.
While many of the recipes range from purees, American, TexMex, and other kid-food, there are some great useful takes for Asian-influenced dishes easy for little ones to chew. The “Korean BBQ” recipe is one my niece loves, as well as the noodles and fried rice, of course.
David Chang’s Netflix series Ugly Delicious was fantastic. The recipe we keep coming back to in here is the Bo Ssäm one. That ginger scallion sauce! I’m hungry now!
Chrissy Teigen is doing her part in bringing Asian American cooking to the mainstream. She gives a nod to her David Chang and includes her mother’sThai recipes. The cookbooks are a marriage of Asian and American dishes. It reflects what being Asian American is like — we aren’t one or the other, but this crazy, amazing mix of it all.
The newest Filipino cookbooks in our collection. The thing to love most about it is how each section is accompanied with a story. The stories of our people, from all walks of life, and how the kitchen is a huge part of our collective history.
